The Famous Cleveland St. Scandal
Prince Albert Victor Christain Edward (1864-1892) Eldest son of the Prince and Princess of Wales. In 1901 his father became King Edward the V11of England. He was a pre-mature baby born at 7 months gestation. This left him with a weak immune system prone to frequent illness. Everyone called him "Prince Eddy".
He developed into a charming and pleasant person unless he was crossed to the extreme. His height was medium, he had a long neck which made him look taller in height. Dark brown wavy hair, large brown doe shaped bedroom eyes and clear complexion. He later wore a small calvary moustach waxed up on the ends. All the women loved him, it was a bonus to know he would be King of England one day.
His intelligence worked in certain ways. He developed obsessions and excelled if interested, if not interested he was slower catching on. As a student when he studied at Trinity and Cambridge Universities, he had a private full time tutor at his beck and call.
As s commissioned Captain in the Royal Calvary of the 10th Hussars. He was proud of his uniform and the pomp, but the routine was overbearing to him most of the time.
Traveled abroad:
He traveled on the routine world tour with his younger brother in (1874-1882) he was 16 years old. It has been said Prince Eddy was a pleasure seeker (party guy) he dabbled to his interest at least once. In the West Indies it was revealed through medical records that he contacted Siphilis. Which pleagued him the rest of his life.
As an excellent sportsman he did well, big game, groose shooting, fishing, what ever the hunters did he was one of the best. He spent hours tirelessly on the hunting field. Not only was he a top fisher, he could clean and gut a fish right out of the water before hooking it on the line, in a few seconds.
Restlessness: Prince did cause his parents concern because he was involved in one fau pas ( thoughtless incident ) after another. A very hyper person, his eyes show bulging, which is a sign of hyperthyroidism. This disease can cause mental problems with altered mental status.
The Cleveland street scandal of 4 July 1886:
A Brothel house for homosexual pleasures. The knowledge of this establishment came about by accident. A post office telegraph employee, a boy was accused of stealing money. He stated, " this was his own money and he earned it working in the Cleveland St. house. He then became an informer to save himself by explaining exactly what he was required to do. Because in those Victorian days homosexuality was a criminal offense punishable by life in prison.
Lord Arthur Somerset: 17 November 1851 - 26 May 1926
The 3rd son of the Duke Beaufort he was married to Lady Georgiana and lived a respectable public life. He was head of Prince Edward of Wales stables as we know later became King Edward V11 and Prince Eddy's father.
A conjecture may be made. This is where Prince Eddy received his no doubt Cleveland street connection, from Lord Somerset who was a regular patron. He was named by several male prostitutes in court as having been paid by him for their favors.
Lord Somerset left England:
After the tedious court trial Lord Somerser left England to live abroad, several times he stole into London and someone always saw him and reported it. Finally he settled as close to London as he could in France. He died in 1926 in complete denial.
Prince Eddy's name alleged on Cleveland St. house patrons list:
Police authorities discovered many of the patrons to this establishment were aristocrats, gentry, and nobles. Prince Eddy's name was on the list of patrons. The night the house was raided by the police Prince Eddy was there. There was a full blown scandal all the upper-classes of gentlemen were summoned into court for the trial. The publicity from this scandal and trial was so great until it threatened the Royal family. Because of this pressure Prince Eddy resigned from the 10th Hussars he was 24 years old. It was a long and drawn out trial carried in all the news papers.
Prince Eddy did not understand rejection this was the final blow to his thread bear psyche. gossipers reported he was in a rage constantly. Every newspaper article placed more fuel on his hatred, rage and concern of how the royal family would view him.
At some point it was clear to him that Cleveland house could be no worse than the drunken prostitutes that roamed the streets and alleys of the East or West end freely. Most passed along their diseases to their tricks.
The Jack the Ripper Myth:
He probably thought he had enough cause to get revenge on the police and prostitutes! Could this be the reason for the taunting notes? Was he overburdened by the idea that the police had the nerve to expose a Royal to the public? Did a Prince in line to become a King deserve to be scandalized in such a way?
Witnesses description: Deer stalkers hat, medium height, small moustach, gentlemans speech, seen talking to the victum in a friendly way.
Sir William Gull was aware of the identy of the ripper and they caught him after his fourth murder. The police put him in a private mental asylum near Sandringham where he stayed for a while. If he was not a suspect, the Royal family would have had him released immediately.
Was it possible for Prince Eddy to escaped, returned to London? Did he have transportation waiting? Did he removed the intestines of yet another victim, Mary Kelly? Rumor had it that he was caught and returned to the mental facility. As a direct response to this, Sir Charles Warren police commissioner resigned from his position a few weeks later.
The new police commissioner, James Monro dispatched a memorandium on 7 Dec.1888. Plain clothes police will work through the winter month in White Chapel. On 18 Jan. 1889 one month later he pulled most of the officers from the district. Could it be sure he knew the Ripper was locked up?
Prince Eddy responded to kindness: At the mental hospital under Dr. Gull's care. His treatment and care plan for the Prince was to insure comfort and peace. Hie was given electric shock treatment, hypnosis, Iodine of Potassium, and other medications, to keep him soothed at all times. He was to be treated like a king. This started the healing process. His rapid response to beauty, comfort, and his favorite foods caused a healing and stability. His violence was released and Dr. Gull agreed that he was able to go on a long cruise, one of his favorite things to do.
In 1890 he became the " Duke of Clarence".
In Time Prince Eddy was himself again He developed a relationship with Princess May of Teck, soon they were engaged to be married.
Before he was able to marry her he died of pneumonia the Royal family reported. The myth does not stop at this point. It has been rumored, the Duke of Clarence lived until 1930 in the old " Glamis Castle".
